Bolster Dog Bed vs. Flat Cushion: Compare Usable Sleeping Space

A bolster dog bed has raised edges around part or all of its sleeping surface; a flat cushion leaves that surface open. Compare the space your dog can actually lie on, the height of the entrance and the parts you can remove for cleaning. Two beds with the same outside measurements can offer very different usable sleeping areas.

Start with the shape your dog uses

The RSPCA’s guide to choosing a dog bed recommends enough room for natural sleeping positions, including stretching out. It describes sided beds as an option for curling up and mattress beds as an option for lying flat. Watch several naps before choosing: one curled-up photo does not show every position your dog uses.

Make a short note of where your dog puts their head, whether their legs extend beyond their body and which direction they approach the bed. These observations give you specific features to compare when a listing offers several shapes.

Bolster bed and flat cushion: a practical comparison

Check Bolster bed Flat cushion
Usable surface Measure between the raised edges, not across them. Check the top surface; rounded or sloping edges can reduce usable space.
Head position A raised edge provides somewhere to rest the head if your dog chooses. No built-in raised edge; compare with how your dog already rests.
Entry Check whether there is an opening and how high it is above the floor. Check cushion height even when there are no sides.
Cleaning access Find out whether the sides, base and center cushion separate. Find out whether the cover removes and whether the insert has separate care instructions.

Compare interior space separately from floor space

Outside dimensions tell you whether a bed fits beside a desk or sofa. Interior dimensions help you judge whether your dog fits between its edges. Keep both measurements in your notes, with the units clearly marked. Do not subtract an estimated bolster width from an outside measurement: padded sides can vary in thickness and shape.

For example, when comparing two equally wide beds, ask for the flat center width of the bolster model and the usable top width of the cushion. If either measurement is missing, request it before deciding. Our dog-bed measuring guide covers measuring your dog; use those measurements alongside the actual sleeping area of each candidate.

Check the entrance and cover construction

A low opening and a low mattress are different features. Look at the height your dog must step over at the intended entrance, then check that furniture will not block that opening. Leave a clear approach rather than fitting the bed tightly into a gap that only accommodates its outer rectangle.

For cleaning, “removable cover” does not automatically mean every filled section can go in the washing machine. Read the instructions for the cover, insert and bolsters separately. Check how the zipper opens and whether you can put the cover back on without forcing the filling through a narrow opening. Keep the care label for future reference; our guide to cleaning different bed components explains why separating those parts matters.

A Petnovo example: The Snuggle Lounge

Petnovo’s current Snuggle Lounge listing describes a low-entry cutout, plush fleece interior, PP cotton filling and a removable cover. Its care directions say to wash the cover according to its label, spot-clean the inner filling as needed and air-dry fully before use. The listed overall sizes do not establish the clear space between the bolsters, so confirm that interior measurement before choosing a size. These construction features are not a claim that the bed treats pain or anxiety.

Your comparison checklist

  • Record the outside footprint and usable sleeping area separately.
  • Compare entry height and the direction of the opening.
  • Check which components remove and how each is cleaned.
  • Keep room for the sleeping positions you actually observe.

Choose the design that meets those checks for your dog and your home. A raised edge is useful only if the remaining sleeping area and entrance also work.
